Bye bye bar ends.

A bit of an end of an era moment for me.I was always a bar end user on my xc bikes over the years and was happy with my 600mm flat bar/stubbie bar end combo, even when all my mates had long abandoned them I always argued the case for bar ends and even fitted them to my modern everyday rider. That was until I got a wide bar last week-a 740mm( ) Easton Haven with 20mm rise.I thought I wouldnt pass judgement until I gave them a chance.5 rides later and Im converted, wide bars with a small rise really are the dogs.I`ll still keep a narrow bar/bar ends on the retro though, just for occasional fun.

Re:

I know what you mean. On my 29er build, I didn't consider them at all and have easton haven carbon rider bars which are way wider than anything I'm used to. Makes you think when riding down narrow bridle ways, and more than once I've caught them on bushes etc, but they are comfy.

That said, I've often caught myself reaching for a non existent bar end, just got comfort when cruising along, it just feels a more natural position for hands/wrists.

I am going to fit the xtr bar end remote on my dbr axis TT though. When I was commuting by bike, I found it a revelation.

When I got my newes bike, it came with 700mm bars, I still ran bar ends on them, but when I changed the bars, mostly I didn't liek the sweep (9degree) to a slightly straighter and slightly wider (720) bar, I don't run them any more and it fine.
I do sometimes miss them on a long long easy climb (road to the trails), but otherwise no.
I do still use them on my retro bike, but my mid school bike I don't, but it has risers and I never found they worked on risers for some reason

Re:

I used to laugh at my mate when he went to 700mm bars, then again at 720, and even more at 780. Then all of a sudden I found myself with 800mm carbon Renthals!!!

Ifind the 660 to 720 range to be fine, anything wider or narrower (built up a bike this week with 560's and woo too small) to be no good.that's the width that works well with my dimensions
