You should be able to fit new ball bearings and you could seal it with a piece of the grey pipe insulation soaked in grease. BITD you could buy foam seals like this to put on you BB and hub axles to stop dirt ingress, they worked quite well. I'm not sure how the slit in pipe insulation would last though. You can convieiently get it in 22mm ID too!

This is the one with all the side play you saw on Tuesday night. The play was due to the excessive outer race wear and the inner is quite pitted. Might have to think of something to reduce the play from the inside of the BB shell i.e. mounted on the spindle.
 
I've been in touch with Martin and he used some "Teflon impregnated polyester" from McMasterr Carr. Looking at the website the closest thing I think is something called Garolite G-9 http://www.mcmaster.com/#composite-plastics/=qosg1a not sure if you can get this in the UK but I'll have a look.

I've also refurbished the crank and to be a little different I’ve ditched the spider gone for TA Cyclotourist chainrings (as Bullseye originally intended) to give it that 1980’s feel. I’m sure this isn’t going to be to everyone’s taste…

I got some 0.5mm glass fibre impregnated board/laminate from a friend last month and cut out a new seal (killing two blades during the process), then "thinned" it down to approx the same thickness as the original seal but it snapped when I tried to fit it. :cry:

I then had to shelve the project but I had a brain wave a couple of weeks ago.....

I had some heavy gauge sheets at work and it seems to work well. Just need to put some miles on the bike to see how it performs.

Those chain rings look perfect...., i like :cool:

The inner chainring bolts are 5/16 UNF.

The spider is the same as the last photo but it's been polished and anodized :cool: .

Next problem.... with the chainline at around 47mm the clearance between the chainstay and crank arm is a few millimetres (at best!). If I move the arm out to give around the same clearance as the otherside the spindle is 10mm too short. I’ve checked the total spindle length and that’s around 150mm.

So……… do I need a “special” 160mm spindle or do I compromise on the chainline? I’ve tried this and with roughly equal clearance on the chainstay’s the chainline is 40mm. Too short? Anyone got any ideas?

Hmm, this is odd. But timely.
I was only replacing some bullseye spacers yesterday, which some kind soul pointed out the generous clearance:

Measuring mine from the inner spider face, I seem to be at 5" or roughly 125mm, unless I have made an error. I shall check.

I am not a guru on bullseye cranks, but it seems to be that there is around 14mm of non driveside spacer, on a 73mm shell when the chainline on the driveside is correctly set (as yours is).

Too short a spindle, initially I thought that you must have had BMX or track cranks. Cryptic though as your spindle seems longer, yet you have less useful length.

Your 150mm, was that including what is welded inside the driveside, or just from the driveside-arm inner-face, outwards?

Mine seems to the same as Gil's but I'm not using the spider, so maybe that's part of the problem? I'll try with that and see if the clearance changes.
 
Ok, I just checked, 5" of spindle as discussed above. Chainline is 46mm. Spacers are 1mm+13mm+1mm on the non drive side. 73mm shell.
I can't identify your frame- it's not something with a wide shell originally destined for a press-fit BB is it?? Shell is 68/70/73, yes??
