Building up my '93 Marin Muirwood

Hi Everyone,

First & foremost - thanks to all who have helped on this wild & crazy journey so far. Your help is truly appreciated.

My frame is now fully stripped & free of rust.... & is in the paint shop round the corner from me (with new Decals from Retrodecals too - it's going to look AWESOME!)

So.... now comes the more technical part - replacing the bits of the bike that move......

Things i know i already need:

New headset
New bottom bracket
New cranks & pedals
New chain

I think i will also need a new groupset - existing Shimano Deore is a 3x7 set up & whilst it works the front chainrings are pretty beat up & imagine the rear cassette is pretty shot too as it had many 1,000s of miles on it before the bike was put in a shed for 18 years.

Sourcing this stuff is a mystery to me - how can you know which new kit is suitable for these old frames ?

Guidance & pointers truly appreciated.

Here's a start.

Sram and shimano can be used together where chains and cassette are concerned.
Only the shifters are a different pull ratio. Personally I like sram chains, where the lowest is as good as mid range elsewhere.

A chain, be it simano, seam, other can be used with sram and shimano cassettes.
7, 8 and 9 speed chains will work on the same speed of cassette, any combo.
Personally, where convenient, I use 9 speed chains on 7 and 8 speed cassettes. Works well.
