a neighbour has been given an BSO, as BSO's go this one isnt that bad! shimano chainset and mechs, promax levers and V brakes, proper alloy ones not the bendy plastic jobbies :? he took it to a LBS and they want £180 to put it right  so he's asked me to take a look and quote him to get it up and running
the list is all cables inners and outers need replacing, all brake pads, both noodles as the inners have worn through with all the rust on the cables sawing away at them, both tyres and tubes ( side walls perished and peeling) one brake lever as it been damaged and the pivot pin is busted (part of the levers casting so not fixable)
so online price cost £70 with postage and 31% discount :) halfords price if the stuff's in stock? £104  but can order it all online and save the petrol costs of running round the local three shops to get it all
I popped into a small BSO LBS today to price up and they were like well helpful....NOT! and my main LBS is good but pricey so I didnt bother looking there
I figure on around 2 or 3 hours to get it all done if all goes well? so what would you guy think would be a reasonable charge to do it all? considering the guys a neighbour?

as its next door and assume you like/get on with them id charge a beer or two or if there like mine invite them over to watch join in plus have a bbq ;) .

If its not someone i know well or get on with i work for between £10-£45 an hour depending on what im doing (my wheel building covers £25-£35 per wheel but thats different)

hope this helps :D

Yeah what c/king said is a pretty good start point
If you are friendly enough though
Charge £20 to do it all?
Your not a bike shop so dont have to cover xx costs and what not
and then its still well cheaper than a shop

And you make yourself some cash for it (obviously he can give you a bit of petrol money too so maaybe £30 for running around too? £30 total, +petrol)
(actually you said online didnt you...)

That said i often do mates bikes and whatnot for free, just for tthe love (man). I shouldnt really and i will probably stop doing it soon, im mugging myself off really, but im kind like that

BSO? What is...BSO?

Bike shaped object, very low value, kind of thing bought from cash and carry, supermarkets, won in a raffle etc.

Also agree with the rest, £20 would be very fair but if you get on really well do it as a favour.

One more bike on the road, one less car etc :)

Industry standard box of jaffa cakes , or some drink . We have a couple of regulars that will pop something in for no reason at all :D

I know you've qualified it as a BSO that isn't too bad - but is it really worth all that time and effort on something you're classing as a BSO? Surely that's worth pointing out to a neighbour? That sort of money is sounding like you could actually buy a decent bike, that's all.

Whether it's something that somebody has got for free, or not, I'd like to think that were I in his shoes, somebody experienced saying you could spend £x on it to put it right, or spend the same £x on something that would be thoroughly decent, I like to think I'd have the pragmatism to see the sense.

well as BSO's go this is one of the better ones that has just seen a bit of neglect :( he only wants it to ride around the local forest and if it doesnt work out pass it on, looking at what it is, it's a £150+ mid range model from a couple of years ago, it's not had a hard life it's just been neglected :( a little tlc and it could be out the hitting the trails again :)
tbh I dont think he'll want it doing as he's just had to spend a fortune on his car so even if I did it as freebie it would be be a no on the parts alone
