Broken Retro thread....what have you broken?

"Nuke Proof Hubs"

Just mentioning them by name on the internet causes a set to fail somewhere. Someone just went down. Hard.

Between me and my brother we broke quite a few bits, mainly from them failing rather than crashing or bad maintenance. List that I can remember:

Numerous shimano BB's (only one that lived was a hope titanium)
Hope superlight front hub (got the replacement still in box!)
Shimano hubs, orig XTR, DX, XT, STX
Rims - campag, ritchey
Spin front wheel - through the rim (was a crash though!)
Frames - Giant ATX, coyote, USA raleigh, Specialized FSR
RST Hi 5 forks - twice, once just destroyed all the internal components with no external damage
Rapidfire units (lots!!)
Cannondale Headshock
Hope rear freehub
A couple of saddles
Azonic tripple wall handle bars (brother bent them up!)
Pedals - Onza HO's, Shimano spd, black widows - bent axles jumping over a wall - he then made new titanium axles in what remained of the lunch break!
Rockshox front forks, judy's, mag21's
Have seen broken - intense M1 frames, sunn radical plus, very abused coella and lots more.

Out of all the things though the most impressive was my brother and his friend managed to put a crack in a Scott LSD WC - the original many adjust one. It became the only frame the two of them would trust, took so much abuse that I don't think anything else would have stood a chance! His one is sitting in my dining room at the moment being rebuilt with Hanebrinks.

Components that we have been very impressed with:
Original XTR cranks
Thumbshifters - even landed the bike on them one day and they still work!
Cannondale Super V - bent a set of tripple clamps on it with no effect on the frame
Scott LSD frame
Hope Ti bottom bracket
Hope Hubs - even if we broke them their service was superb and without question
Rhyno Lite rims

That's all I can remember for now!

I loved the look of those hubs, but your right, they didnt last 5 mins!! I think they were just meant to be looked at and not ridden on!

The XTR cranks are one of the things we were impressed with. :) Bottom list is of those bits that survived well. The cranks also meant we could run 48-11 as top gear on the Scott!

I haven't smashed much.
Shimano chain
Cannondale Raven - seat tube spine parted company with the rest of it
Think thats it. Wore out other things, but never had that much break or fail.

Lots of rear mechs in days of old. Who remembers Campag Olympus. Went through lots of them.
Also used to bend the gear hanger in the process, but being a steel beast a bit of heat and ignorance it was back as good as new.

Happy times

Old Faithful

My Highpath (Cleland) is over 20yrs old and, shock & horror, its just worn out its original front (hub) brake shoes.

It's done several thousand miles of all weather cycling in varios European countries. It's still equiped with its original components apart from 1 new freewheel, several chainrings, chains sadles, and pedals, 1 set of front brake shoes, lots of tyres/tubes.

I did brake the original handlebars about 1991.

Maintainance is minimal, oil the chain gears etc. Chisel off dried on mud (to reduce weight), and replace tyres/tubes/tighten spokes as needed.
All the bearings are quiet and smooth, though they must be running on dried grease dust by now. :?:

I avoid the worst trail conditions with my modern bikes but not with this one.

I get the general impression that most bikes aren't this reliable/low maintainance?
