Yep, I know exactly what you mean. The same thing happened with my RekTek. I had a tatty assortment of old very used Syncros components ready for the build, but after it came back from Dekerf painted in Ferrari Grigio Alloy, the whole game changed. Tatty kit was just NOT going to do the frame/paint justice. So I had to get everything refinished or get some much nicer kit sourced. It took a bit longer than I anticipated, and quite a bit more scratch, but in the end I was very happy with the results. I think you should take your time putting this Brodie together the way you image it should be. I'm looking forward to the trip.

I dont think the spec the bike came with, when you got it was at all bad. If you polished all the alloy parts, it would come up like glass, and a mirror finish and as new.
Perhaps i would, lift the rear mech from Dx to XT, and add a black outer chainring.
Some minty Amberwall tyres, perhaps, i would strip the wheels, refinish the black rims, as i did on the Rm20s on my clockwork orange, rebuild with new spokes etc. chain brake blocks etc, and a period saddle and grips.
with a small budget, the bike would remain period correct, shop floor fresh, and ready to ride. And look amazing.
