BRING BACK FORK BOOTS!!

but yeah.. they look crap.

That there is the issue. Some forks suit them (or vice versa) like RS Quadra's or Indy's, but some look better without them - Bombers, Judy's, Manitou for example. Pace without a shadow of a doubt should not have them. Used to see RC-35's every now and again with boots and it just made me feel a bit weird.

But then I'm a tart who likes fettling, so maintenance wasn't/isn't an issue for me. Maybe that and trying not to use nice forks in bad weather.

yes they don't look good but I have had my mag 21's since '94 and they have only been pumped up 4 times, never been serviced and the stanchions are mint and the seals look new. I put that down to the boots, it's not just dirt they keep out - they keep out light which degrades rubber and plastic.

one difference between some older forks ie mag 21's (got to have the sl ti :D vesion )

is those forks used steel stantions, alot of forks like Z1's etc are ally.

Boots

They should have offered coloured boots & maybe people wouldve been swayed to keep em on!

Boots just collect and hide the dirt and grime from everyday riding....besides, they are too fruity for my tastes. Just MHO. :)

no they keep the dirt out, that's the point, mine are minty underneath and they were last cleaned 4 years ago. My bombers which don't have them need cleaned after every ride.

Boots

Gotta say my Judys are immaculate under the boots after years of use!
And I still say coloured boots are a good idea!

i'm currently zipping boots to my Manitou sx's half way down the stanchions.

get the looks and keep the seal ;) best of both worlds? (not road-tested them yet )

Best that they are the type that 'tie top and bottom - if the bottom is a loose fit on the fork leg then, yes, they will allow the dirt inside - with serious consequences for the maintenance shy... ;)
