bottom bracket play

I have just bought a second hand Ridgeback MX20 for my daughter and I have noticed there is a slight play in the bottom bracket (wiggling the cranks I can feel it, and on the chainring side i can see the chainring moving a bit). Is it important to get this sorted quickly? Would I be able to take the bottom bracket apart, regrease the bearings and tighten it back up or does it need a new bottom bracket?

Yes it important. The BB shouldn't have play it will slowly get worse. I don't which type but most are fairly easy to maintain

Ridgeback website just says "cro-mo axle" for bottom bracket.

Regarding the bottom bracket, if re-greasing and adjusting it doesn't help, fit a cartridge bottom bracket, they're a lot less faff than the old style adjustable ones and last for ages: http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/shim ... -prod71369
