Silver was necessary in order to meet the parameters I'd set out, being year appropriate, weight conscious, and matching the Ritchey pedigree of the frame. The Black Ritchey stems of the day were heavier...and I wanted to assure a sub-23 pound bike.
I usually don't target weight in a build, but this one was a personal challenge - and the silver was a minor concession to make!
