Hi Stew,
I think it was 1997 that trek the trek built Priveteers first came out and they all had 1 1/8 head tubes. All the Santa Cruz Bontrager built Bontragers had 1 inch head tubes. I worked in Mike Cookson Cycles at the time and we stocked Race and Race Lite frames and Priveteer bikes.
I got a Race lite frame in 96 which I used for everything. You can tell the Race Lite from a Race frame by the head tube which was machined away at the front, the bottle bosses were popriveted into the frame on the racelite instead of brazed as on the race, the chain and seat stays were narrower gauge and the gusseys on the chain stays were longer and narrower on the Race Lite.
I currently have a Race frame in Large which I've had for about three years. 2 years ago I had it resprayed apple green with silver lettering on a white panel. I also had a rear disk mount fitted, and the rear cable stop removed from the seat stays. I had the front mech cable stopp repositioned slightly to give a better cable line.
At the same time I sent off apair of 2002 Marzocchi marathon S 80 mm travel air forks to Windwave for service and got them to retro fit a 1 inch steerer at the time so I could have a relatively light pair of forks.
This bike has helped me to the victory in the open team catagory of the 2006 24/12, 2007 Mayhem, 2007 24 hr pairs 24/12, 2nd in the 2007 spring polaris, and 8th in the 2007 enduro 6, 7th in 2005 SITS pairs catagory. ( 15 years of riding and now that I have a mortgage and a family and no time I suddenly start getting results.)
I love this bike but have decided it's time to move on so I'm getting it ready for sale either as a complete bike (xt / hope mix) or as a frame headset and fork package.
