hi all, noob here,
I have a 1996 14.5 inch zaskar and want to know if i would be ok to match it up with a set of 98 bomber z1 bams.
I think the forks have 120mm of travel( could be 100mm, not certain).
Would it be safe, and would the bike handle like a barge?
The bombers have just had a service and a new paint job so i would like to use em if poss!
thanks guys jamie.

I have a Zaskar LE of a similar age and have a pair of Rockshock SIDS on mine. I think the Z1s are 100mmm, it was only the Z1 Drop Off which were 130mm.

1998 Z1 BAMs had 110mm travel. The 96 Zaskars obviously had 63mm Judy SLs on them for racing and that's what they were designed for.

You're obviously changing the character of the bike a lot from what it was designed for, but the great saving grace of your plan is that the Z1 is a great fork, and more important still, it's orange.

It probably wouldn't handle too well if you stuck with a long zero-rise stem and a flat bar, but if you fit a shorter stem with rise and a swept riser bar it will be great. The only problem is it might turn you into a bit of a hooligan on wheels, but we'll trust you to handle it in a mature and responsible fashion.

The other main difference is that the bottom bracket height will be about three quarters of an inch higher than designed (that's without sag). That can give a higher centre of gravity, which isn't good news, but I guess you might have the seat a bit lower anyway if you're running it freeride-style.

It's a classic frame and a classic fork, surely it must make a good bike? Suck it and see.

You'll be fine :D
