Black runs on fully rigid retro...?

i think a, b, c & e personally, canti's aren't meant for fast, or stopping normally. good luck mate, and HAVE FUN !!

a & b

If I was racing downhill and a fella on a rigid bike was walking the course in front of me I would not be happy. I know this isn't in the spirit of retrobike-ness  , but on the race course when the red mist descends you might not be in a good position.

Can you rent / borrow a full susser? I totally trashed my 1990 Fire Mountain going through a rock garden including bending the seat post, splitting the headset race and buckling the wheels. P**s poor cantilevers on a wet downhill run are also not good.

fit a vee brake on the front at least
and some big tyres ride it have fun

you might be suprised by some of the wusses that inhabit trail parks these days

cantis

i managed the 'cut gate path' not so long back on a fully rigid-canti-equipped marin 1993!! taking my time and respecting limits got me home in one piece.
now im out of traction and my speech has returned i cant wait to go again  just kidding  have fun fella, its the taking part/experience.

'ello mate!

D for me, it is a shame I will be at sea, I'd drive up, pick you up, and drive you there just to watch.

Show these whipper snappers on engineless motorcycles just what f*ckin time it is! :p

It all depends on the nature of the black run as even though they are meant to conform to a grading system they do vary enormously.

I've ridden plenty of red routes with black graded sections on a fully rigid bike with cantis. I'd happily ride the full black route at Glentress for example on the same bike, although I haven't yet. Sure it is more of a challenge and scary at times, it is completely achievable once you adapt your style to the bike you are riding.

But then isn't the challenge and the scariness part of the whole point of mountain biking?

And as scottrider mentioned, your choice of pads and canti set-up makes a huge difference to the performance of your brakes. I've had a go of other people's bikes at some retro meets and I've been a little concerned at how badly set-up and therefore how under-powered some peoples v-brakes are let alone cantis. The same can be said of discs too.

If I could ride down Jacob's Ladder in the Peak District back in 1992 then I know that I can do it on the same bike now.

MBUK took a £300 rigid bike down Cap d'Ail, Steve Peat used to ride rigid Konas downhill (there was an article called "Run them rigid" or something in MTB Pro about this) so you'll be fine.
