Bikes at the dump.......

Tips around here are run by private contractors, basically they get to keep anything worth anything e.g. scrap metal, wood as biomass, car batteries

So as you'd expect they are hot on anyone taking anything.

Bikes will go to the highest bidder like any other scrap metal, you would need a waste processing license to buy them and would probably need and expect to buy them all including the treasure and junk. Hence again no individual can take one.

It's been like this for many many years. It's a shame the poorly paid council operator can't be slipped a fiver to turn a blind eye, but in theory this mode of operation is cheaper for the tax payer.

Many charities yes some of the treasure may slip out like any organisation but it's probably paying for running costs.

Charities may well build up reserves (check out the rnli) but that's to ride out dry spells.or invest and then spend the profits on operational costs.

So yeah veterans have millions, but probably that is invested and the dividends pay the operational costs. So you see if they spent it all, they might go bust.

As an aside I can never believe the number of car batteries at our tip.

Not 400m from the tip is a scrap metal dealer that will give you £7-20 all day long for a car battery....

Yes...people are strange or maybe just don't realise the value.

Tips are fascinating places.

What does he do with them?

I guess private arragements are posible, but if its council run thats surprising.....unless hes a scrap dealer.

Lucky you if theres treasure, unless its one of those types that won't sell privately!

Thats great to have a supply so close....or maybe not if its tempting!

Does he get much vintage in the mix?

In theory, the same setup could be run with the profits going into the public purse.

Absolutely.

But the country voted for successive governments that value a shrinking state, so handed all that to the private sector.

Much like what is happening to the NHS. Public money or profit redirected into the private sector.
