Bike Insurance Cover

Happy New Year Guys.

Does anyone have any recommendations for bike insurance?
As in theft from home
Theft whilst out riding
Personal injury etc, etc, etc!

Cheers
G.

i have heard joining British Cycling has benefits that can include recommendations for insurance and possible discounts, as well as back if for someone crashing in to you etc, haven't done it myself though.

If you're going the British Cycling route, I'd steer you towards Cycling UK (was the CTC) on the basis that they do more for cyclists' rights and for commuters than BC do, who are more into promoting cycling as a sport. Plus BC has supposedly signed a big deal with a fossil fuel burner

It's just on my house insurance, check yours.
I only needed to list any over so much ££ depending on who it was with that year.

I thi k the only thing it's never covered is 'competition use'.

It's why most people are actually insured cycling on the road without knowing.
Assuming you have some sort of home insurance.

Im out of my depth here, so happy to be corrected

"Competition" may be open to interpretation and so sportives, charity rides, chaingangs may possibly offer get outs for the underwriter.

When I enquired some years back about insuring my bikes on house insurance they wanted a lot of extra premium to cover the risk, else they would just offer a very nominal compensation value.

The op seemed to be also asking about legal aid etc. Not sure where home insurance stands with that

And, its a personal thing, but as a road user, I like to have 3rd party insurance just in case.

All mine have been a tick box for more expensive at time of buying the home insurance, incl legal aid. Never added much. Risk is very low for cycles.

But there are website and specialist insurance, a quick search will find the comparison sites do it now.

There is another thread somewhere and I think there was pedalcover a new one by cyclists. Name could be wrong.
There is still the competitive add on etc there too, abroad etc

Also things like locking up in a shed (sometimes a garage, etc) to look out for.

So only cover what is not already covered OR remove anything cycle from you other insurances (to save a few pennies).

I'm just saying, check what you have already.
I think mine is anything over £1000 needs to be written down, anything under doesn't. That value varies with company, some are £500, some £2000.

EBIKES are often excluded and another tick box...

Aside from the lock requirements, many home insurance policies have a claim limit for outbuildings/sheds [1], mine was £3k, for non-named items regardless of how securely locked they were. If you have multiple items under the named item limit, but in total exceed the claim limit, you are not fully covered!

1. A detached garage counted as an outbuilding.

Took going back to telephone recordings when I took out the policy and threats of going to the Insurance Ombudsman to get them (AA) in that case to pay out the full claim in excess of £6.5k.

i currently insure my bikes through Bikmo, policy works on two figures - Total value at home (I.e. all your bikes etc)and a maximum value away from home (i.e. your two most expensive bikes If you’ll only be away with two of them). They were also happy to allow a proper storage facility to be counted as “home” whilst I was moving house.

Whichever route you take, check the small print very carefully, as apparently “I could not expect the person selling me the policy on the phone to understand the policies they were selling and whether they were suitable”.

Yes always check what your policy is for, especially once you have it, you tend to get more detail then. But can easily cancel.

Sure it was @elPedro666 that was talking about specialist bike insurance before.

Also it is the biggest pain in the arse listing every damn bike on the insurance....😂
Take pictures of your bikes and the serial number and details and parts if you built it yourself.

It make life easier in a claim (and the police, its how I eventually mine back)
