Bike Helmets

Not really.

There a lot of evidence to suggest you're more likely to have an accident whilst wearing one due to cars passing closer and quicker as they don't see you as such a risk.

It depends on the riding as well. If I was downhilling in the Alps I'd be more inclined to play it safe. Low speed XC and on the road I'll continue taking my chances. :)

that reminds me. i saw a car abandoned following a crash a while back.
it was a head on crash in a 30 zone (they were on wrong side of the road on a corner due to parked cars).

the driver and passenger obviously weren't wearing seatbelts and there were two head shaped imprints in the windscreen (glass cracked), smattered with blood.

the moral...even low speed impacts can cause nasty injuries.

if they had just had their seatbelts on they probably would have walked away instead of a nice trip to the hospital.

isnt a helmet the same kind of thing ;)

Wonder how there injuries would have changed if they'd been wearing cycle helmets?

Don't give anyone any bright ideas. Helmets are unnecessary on bikes, never mind inside cars.

Evangelism and (internet) didacticism does more to turn people against these things than for, I will only say this; I believe in Evolution, therefore it bothers me not if you wear a helmet.

Forgot the smiley on my post. :D

i take it that those who dont wear helmets have disabled their car airbags because they aren't necessary.

plus if you have a bump you wont have to replace the airbag.....just fix your broken noggin.

;)

theres an idea.. might get a helmet for driving the car.maybe a neck brace too. people might think im the stig.

Back in '93, my best mate was killed in a fall as a result of his helmet coming off

I don't unless its downhill or something involving drops. I think it goes without saying if you are racing or really pressing on then you should have one on.

If you have ever worn a real motocycling lid for any length of time then when you pick up a cycling 'hat' its nothing but amusing. It will protect you from the smallest of knocks, you can crush them by hand. Just because you crashed and cracked one doesn't mean it saved your life, you might of just gotten a bump on the noggin'. It doesn't make me feel safe unless its an MX / DH lid which feel a lot more like they would actually do something in the event of a crash.

Personally I find it a bit worrying that every man and his dog feels the need to wear one cycling down to the beach. It most definately does not need to be law, if I want the wind in my hair and I am willing to take the risk with my own life, that has to remain my choice. It seems a bit over the top, you can enjoy a safe cycle without one as many have done for decades.

Helmets are something we didn't have when I was a kid, I fell off hundreds of times and sustained all sorts of injuries none on the head. My dad taught me to cycle by pushing me down a big hill so I had speed and could balance, I would always fall off at the end and bang myself up but I learned, quickly :p

There are some that play it safe and some that don't. I guess I fall in the don't camp, I don't wear a seat belt ever (unless I'm a passenger) and had a few shunts with no injuries. You cannot protect against everything in life and where you draw the line with safety gear is a personal choice.

Far far too many people beleive 'I'm in my indestructible box with a belt on and nothing can hurt me', these people make bad choices. Some element of risk keeps you keen and alert, make careful choices with some vision ahead and you'll be alright :D
