Best short cage rear mech for 1 x 8 set up???

Thinking of putting single ring on front of latest project, think cassette is 8 speed 11-30, maybe 32, can't remember... :facepalm:

Need a mech as the STX one I thought I could use is damaged (long story) - could I use a road mech or wouldn't it cope with the cassette? Otherwise what is the best MTB short mech to use??

A short cage Shimano road mech will only go up to about 27 teeth.

Far be it from me to suggest you ignore the safety stickers ... but I've squeezed 30t under a short DX before, and 34t under an m735 XT mid/long

On my 105 Short cage I use a 11-34 (with a single ring on the front)

The Shimano RD M739 is a very respectable unit. Depending on the chainring size you use you can actually use the short or medium cage in lieu of the long cage. Personal preference for me is the long cage - less cable tension on the shifter pod mech pulling it up into the biggest gear on the cassette.
