I'm after a decent roof rack to take a maximum of two bikes. I'm not ruling out those type that slot into the towbar recess either.

Anyone have some, experience of some with good and bad

what car are we talking about ?

we have a fantastic rear rack that hangs of rear door of our Citroen Picasso it takes 2 bikes , its a genuine Citroen part

I've got a rack that takes 3 bikes that attaches to a plate that is bolted between my towbar and towball, really useful as you can still tow with 3 bikes on it. It cost about £40 from towequipe.

Carl.

Atera. A three bike tow ball fitting with a 4th bike extension.
They have the sliding draw mech that allows you to open the boot with the bikes on - i have seen thule and they don't move enough.
Well built in Germany.
At 90 no problems. You decide units.
Little affect on fuel consumption relative to a roof solution + you have Mc D safety factor!
+ smug factor when flying past those worried drivers with the 60£ Halfords solution.

We've got a couple of Thule carriers that fit to the roof of our Audi A3. They're really well made and look like they'd stand up to some abuse when left on the roof at a service station (not that anyone wants to nick a bike with no springy forks, right?). I leave them on for most of the summer. They're really easy to use once installed on the bars. I remove the whole assembly, bars and carriers, each time I don't need it.

Bad points are that I can't seem to move the carriers forward on the roof bars. This is probably me being daft, but the position of the bars is definitely fixed. This means a little spoiler at the top of the back window now has a dent where it collides with the carrier when you open the boot. It would be OK on a longer car. Ours is a fake estate. Also, as garrema says, fuel economy nosedives if you go anywhere above seventy. The bikes get covered in squashed insects too. I tell people they got there 'cause I ride so fast. no one believes me.
