That would be Hillary Stone - he makes his living from it, which people have varying views on. Personally I think it's a little exploitative of people selling stuff in good faith believing it'll go to a good home but there is the counter argument that it does tend to find a good home but at a premium price and if he didn't buy them all then some might find their way to the tip or back into a dusty shed.

I've just found a frame I sold at a recent jumble for sale on another forum for 400% more than I sold it. I know I could have posted it for sale here (or elsewhere) but, knowing the state it was in, I didn't want to. I didn't want the buyer not seeing it 'in the flesh' and recognising the potential trouble areas. Instead I sold it for a very low price thinking that it was going to the buyer as a winter project which would require a fair bit of work to bring up to scratch. It is now being sold (by a well-known purveyor of pre-owned bicycles and equipment who, as far as I know, is not the person who bought it) in virtually the same condition as I sold it with no mention of the problem areas.

I don't mind someone making a profit but 400%!!

It's being taken for a mug that I really object to

It may be a little distasteful to some making a profit from this stuff, but Hilary Stone doesn't appear to ask huge prices for his stuff - less than they would go for on ebay in most cases. He also has a massive amount of knowledge weh it comes to older bikes, he has identified frames in a number of cases when no-one else could.

However, I have never intentionally made money from cycle jumble purchases (never to my recollection), I buy the parts for my own use, and would hope that others do the same keeping the prices much more reasonable than ebay. I have noticed the prices climbing at cyclejumbles for frames especially though.

Old Ned - it's never nice to have that happen, but at least you can take the moral high ground. If you weren't willing to sell it in any other way then you did what was right, they will have to live with their concience (if any) for inflating the price.

The sad truth is that traders are often needed to save old bikes (or cars, or what have you) as they can save far more of them than us as hobbyists, should we begrudge them a living, or the occasional business practice that grates us - as we are not doing it for the money.

There are a few traders though (one recently banned here springs to mind) that none of the above applies to, they should be banned from buying bikes!!

It's on the 21st. Give Ken a ring, I'll post a scan of his flyer soon.

There's one at Whalley Lancs on the 30th Oct. at Oakhill College as usual.
