Best place to buy spokes?

Anyone have any recommendations for where to buy spokes? I normally buy the stainless double-butted ones from cyclebasket but I'm building a set of wheels where plain-gauge galvanised are more appropriate. Front and rear hubs are different diameters so I need 32 in one length and 40 in the other. Have looked at ebay but all the sellers seem to do them in multiples of 10 which then works out more expensive and I don't want a stack of spare spokes.

You are never going to win that battle mate. You either buy in bulk (used to be boxes of 144 gross, prob 100's these days) and have leftovers or buy in small quantities and pay a premium, but don't have the leftovers. Up to you.
Last purchase I made was from RIbble in 100 offs, not sure if they bother these days with everyone wanting factory race wheels
Spa cycles at harrogate should be able to sort you

I bought spokes from Malc on here (the cycle clinic) and couldn't fault the service

I usually get mine mail order from Spa Cycles in Harrowgate and have found them to be pretty good. Might be worth a look on their website.

Try one of the German places. One of them sells singly (at a small premium) and a couple of the others do 10s at agood price

Nidderdale cycles on ebay are good, very cheap too. You need to buy nipples separately tho

My last sets (double butted decent ones mind) have been from Nidderdale also. Very good customer service when a spoke was missing too.


But for cheap and chearful spokes just buy a bulk of ebay, forget about the spares, either sell them on or make things from them.

You may get lucky if you knwo the lengths. or don't mind moving a mm either way.

sdeals.com carry rustless spokes, that might be more the look you're after? their website looks dodgy as hell, but they are standup guys.

Craziness, all of the above work out more expensive than the stainless db ones from cyclebasket, except for the rustless ones at sdeals whatever they are. I'll give them a ring tomorrow. I don't know how cyclebasket do theirs at the price they do but I've built scores of wheels with them and they're really good quality. I just don't thing they'll look 'right' on a 40s-50s lower end of the market -style wheel. You'd think plain butted galvo spokes would be cheap as chips!
