I use second hand UN72s (I've got 2 around 30 years old, seem to be very very durable, can't wear them out) or new Tange LN7922s which are probably the closest modern equivalent.

I've bought a Tange LN7922 on the Bay (via accepted Offer) to begin the stock pile and a UN71 on here to get the ball rolling on my current build..

A retrobiker can never have too many square taper bbs.
I could probably put my hands on 100, which means I can usually find the right length/taper/width/threading...
And it takes up a lot less space than the 100 wheels

I agree entirely - can't believe it's taken me this long to start collecting them.
As for wheels, I only have about 4 sets and I've maxed out my available space!

I really regret not buying more un55 bb's when they were still available. I bought what I could when the news came they were being taken out of production.

Tell you what though, the current un300 has replaceable cartridge bearings
So could potentially last for ever!

Size choice is slightly restricted

From what I hear, they fall apart within a year. Not sure if replacing the bearings will help. I would rather replace the bearings in a Phil Wood...

Axle and cups should be good for ever - they just come with bearings shimano consider adequate at the "300" level.
Once they are replaced with something better...
