The finest off the peg 531 touring bike available in the UK in my opinion, formed having owned and ridden both the 531 and 708 Royal and Randonneur. My preference over the Galaxy and Super Galaxy, though they are also fine bicycles.

Rando is a contender.
The galaxy, although not quite a nice a ride, had further reach though, and kept the touring market alive, along with the dalesman

I had an earlier Dalesman and it was nice. You're right about the reach of the Galaxy, it was the go to tourer for many riders. I suppose the Rando was more niche. I'd like to try a tig welded Dalesman now
