The bike had Avid ultimate V brakes before but the Paul canti's work well too and are silver, always a good thing!

You can lock up the wheels with the Avid Ultimate V brakes, so powerful enough for me. I had mechanical discs once with custom solid stainless steel cable outers (no compression) and power was good, modulation ok but constant adjusting, disc rubbing and pad wear was a pain. Compared to the discs and the Ultimate V-brake set-up the Paul wide canti's based on the old Mafac design are plenty powerful and have better modulation and the pads last and don't need constant adjustment. They all have pros and cons, including discs. Perhaps it comes down to what good points you want and what pitfalls you can live with.
