It seems counter intuitive, you'd think they would tighten in the direction of pedalling, but it's all to do with procession: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Precession_(mechanical) For the same reason, pedals have the thread opposite handed to the bottom bracket on the same side, so they always undo towards the back of the bike.
