Managed to break a couple working on neglected bikes

It's not really the right application for a vice, using it like a big spanner - with offset twisting forces but it's excellent stuck bike components!

So are you saying tightening it even more with an old steel seatpost from a knackered Pug on the end of the lever won't help matters either?

My understanding of it:

Put the seized post in the vice with the frame flat.
Then squash the post so it's a millimetre oval,
Then you bring all your weight to bear in the headtube (while a colleague pulls the stays upwards)

So you've got around 1kN force, on a 560mm lever, to expand the jaws 1mm in 90⁰ (in a swing of about 1m, so the jaws get 1000x the force on the head tube)


That's how I broke our vice.
Push!
Crack.
Thump.

It's hard to catch the work piece when it happens - especially if you have a blow-torch in one hand.

Had the mother of all fixed cup seizures. A Dremel did the job, after the above failed.
