its a 73mm bb in a 73mm shell and has been installed correctly, in my time with mtbs i've fitted about twenty bb's and never had this happen
as for the other side of the coin i've spent enough money in the said shop on high end parts to expect to be given the benefit of the doubt over a £30 part, although not wanting to be premature they might still replace it so i can't really grumble (yet!) but its still a bummer that it broke so quickly

so what exactly is broken? lot of rambling little information ;)

If you feel that you are not getting anywhere with the shop and you have a valid claim, it may be worth contacting the distributer/importers directly with your grievances to see what their response is.
I had a similar issue with a pair of Shimano shoes in the respect that a cleat ripped off the sole within a week and you could see a 'blow hole' in the plastic of the sole from where it had failed. The bike shop put it down to too much force being exerted on the cleat area but you could clearly see that there was blow holes in the plastic all around the cleat. I sent the shoes straight back to the distributer with a covering letter and copy of the original bill of sale and a week later a new pair of M200 shoes arrived on the doorstep replaced under warranty that lasted for years after that.
