Being in the plastic modelling industry you can by a 'clear blue' paint it is not a solid colour but as it says - its clear and can be painted onto
anything from plastic to steel, you can buy this 'clear colour' in small spray cans, but the little jars can be thinned and sprayed through
an airbrush, though to get an even colour blue the entire paint needs to be stripped back to bare chrome.

These clear colours will chip though so you would have to be careful if you did respray the frame.

Thanks mate, I did ponder on the 'only original once / patina preservation and clean the hell out of it and wax...' especially if the refurb is as fragile as the original! :)

I'm tempted to touch in some of the vulnerable areas around the BB shell ( chain offs )
polish and wax, build it very nicely and stand back.
The Tamiya stuff looks excellent, really appreciate the links, thanks!

No harm in buying a can of the stuff and having a bash at some hard to spot
area's and if it looks ok then have a blast at the other area's but remember
to only try and spray those chrome area's only, otherwise there will be a build
up of blue on the original blue and may look a deeper blue.

there are small area of rust on edges of lugs... best way to treat?
Clean off the rust with brass/steel wire wool, Polish up the chrome affected area then rub thinners to remove any wax/polish then over coat with the clear blue, the paint should seal out any damp but make sure its thoroughly dry and dust free.
