I still dont think that 653 is a 653, it weighs more than the big DX rusty frame

Yeah I checked that, & no the 653 is definitely lighter than than the 531. Perhaps you hadn’t had your spinach that morning? :mrgreen:

When they get back from the powder coaters I'll post the weights.

Well, the proofs in the pudding.. picked the frames up last night and had myself a weighathon, this is how they pan out;

1987 20” 531 All terrain 2370g
1989 22” 531 All terrain 2730g
1990 20” 531 Magnum 2630g
1991 20” 531 Magnum 2690g*
1994 18” 653 Magnum main tubes 2570g*

And as a comparison;
1992 20” 653 Antaeus (tubes & stays) 2230g*
1994 18” Titanium (main tubes) 1758g
1996 20” 653 Cape Wrath 2510g
1997 20” Tange Cro-Mo Cape Wrath 2410g

All frames naked as they were born + powder coat

*frames fondled by LGF

As you can see the ‘94 frame labeled as 653 is lighter than the 531 but only just, it’s not as conclusive as I’d thought it would be.
Possibly the much chunkier rears triangle (exactly the same as my lads ‘93 531 Cape) which I’m assuming is 531 might be the reason?
As for the 653 decal that is was sporting, IMO I’d say it’s original. Having looked closely at Gil’s version & Steve’s from H Lloyds’s, this one was clearly different and under lacquer.

Anyway, I’m more surprised at how light the original ‘87 Cape is...

And I’m looking forward to fitting forks & headsets tonight for a full “frame set weight”

Edge of your seat stuff! :LOL: :LOL: :LOL: :LOL: :facepalm:

Not that it really matters but;

1987 20" 531 all terrain, XT Headset & tapered Cro-mo forks 3300g
1989 22" 531 all terrain, Tioga Headset & tapered Cro-mo forks 3870g
1990 20" 531 Magnum, DX headset & Cro-mo forks 3780g
1991 20" 531 Magnum, Tioga Headset & Cro-mo forks 3920g
1994 18" ??? Magnum, Tioga Ahead & Cro-mo forks 3670g

I wonder if the rear triangles are 531 or 653 at all or if only the main triangle has that tubing

Did the original decals give any clues?

"653 Magnum Tubes" as opposed to "653 Magnum tube set" so yes, as you suggest 653 for the main tubes and 531 for the rest might be the case...

They'll come in handy if the roof caves in: SOLID :D

Glad I'm not the only one (although mine's actually a work space) :shock: :LOL:

Re:

Or possibly generic cromo for the stays?

I've had a few frames with reynolds tubing that have seemed overly heavy. I came to the conclusion it was cost cutting - use the minimum amount of reynolds to allow a reynolds decal to be fitted.

Also had some reasonably light frames with boat anchor cost cutting forks
