Barracuda

just imagine trying to cut through a frame with a gear cable though! the cable would wear long before any damage to the frame surely?

Cut open a piece of outer and run a piece of the plastic inner part through the noodle. I can't find the pic of my old A2X that showed it, but have a pic of the same thing I did for the metal derailleur cable guides on my Bottecchia as an example.

That's a good idea except that on the Barracudas I am talking about the little eyelet the cable is routed through is at the top tube level of the seat post and even with the inner housing, the cable would make a sharp bend upon exiting and the pull would not be centered for the canti's, which means it will never pull evenly.

jamabikes, have you seen what plastic cable housing rubbing on a full suspension bike can do?. Now imagine steel cable on your painted frame sliding back and forth every time you apply your brakes.

It won't take long for a rubbing cable to mark the paint- though granted it would take a long time to cut it in half. The plastic outer will reduce friction and protect the paint.

yeah but thats rubbing not cutting. and do you think plastic tubing is stronger or weaker than metal?

Sell the frame and buy something with a cable hanger. That will solve the problem once and for all.

I am hoping you can define the difference between the friction of a plastic shielded cable rubbing up and down a tube and a cable rubbing back and forth across an acute angle. Keep in mind the brake cable will be under constant tension, which will increase every time you squeeze the lever. That's not cutting?

The piece of tubing will remain stationary in the noodle. The cable slides back and forth inside it. A little bit of lube, and it will last almost as long as the rest of your cable outers. If the worry of replacing the piece of tubing every couple of seasons is causing you too much stress, like I said earlier, sell the frame and buy something with a cable hanger. You'll sleep better at night.

Problem solved. I did not find any of the presented options satisfactory. Thanks for all the input.
