Bargain Ebay bike lights

Doing lots of night riding this year so to go along with my single Cree XML Spot which I still find is great I've ordered one of these for the bars for a flood type light.

A mate is using the 7 LED version but I reckon that's overkill as a twin Solarstorm x2 setup is good enough, this is just an easier package with only the single light and 5 LED's.

Going to have a look at getting some Samsung Cells and a waterproof case and making up my own custom packs too.

Will be interesting to see how well the custom pack does against the cheapo ones supplied with the lights.

My lights have all been 4.2V ones (the original 'Rose ebay special) light was and I've noticed most have moved to 5V for USB. which is good ads LiPo pack and 20A/h pack (at nominal 3.7V cell voltage) are compact and cheap and robust.

Re:

You thinking along the lines of rc car or helicopter packs from the likes of hobbyking?

So bumping this for an update as I've been night riding lots and have found a few things.

The original silvers spots (https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/CREE-XM-L-XM ... :rk:7:pf:0) are being copied and made with far inferior LED units to the originals as my original light is far better than example bought last year. Quality is now so variable I would say to avoid them totally.

I have however found a better replacement for your lid step up the Brite-R Selecta:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Brite-R%C2%AE- ... HZ8E3NPDEE

This set up is insane value. Not only does the light appear to have the genuine Cree XML in it. The kit is fantastic. 2 18650 Cells that would appear to actually be 2500mah (juding by the fact they run for 2 hours on full power with no change in indicator level). The waterproof holder is light enough to attach to you helmet and is secure and if you need longer runtime swap in a pair of up to 4000mah branded cells. The QR bracket is also great and although not used on the helmet it fits other lights (like all bar mounted lights) and it's a quality bit of kit with easy action and so secure. The other thing is you also get a velcro helmet mount too which is more stable than the stretchy one. The light itself is good, with a similar beam and spread to the original silver/black spot but offers 3 stage brightness and flashmode.

They do a 4 led light called the Veir too:

Not tried these but if the selecta is anything to go by it should be good.

We've also had one of our guys try the batteries in a case solution posted above. He firstly bought a 6 cell case and 6 2500mah cells. His first rundown text showed a 7 Cree XML run for 3 hours on full power, I was impressed and then he told me 2 cells were still showing charged. It seems the 6 cell holder runs 4 + 2 mode where you switch the output over and run 4 cells separately from the other 2, which then can act as a reserve which give about another 1.5 hours run time on full power.
So when I refresh my batteries next winter I'm just going to get a 4 cell case and 4 x 2500mah cells as they should do about 4 hours with my 5 Cree light.

I have the Brite R Vier.

For about £20... here's my thoughts.

1. It's bright. VERY bright. Any more light is just pointless IMO. I rarely use it on full. The beam is not really very 'floodlight' more 'spot/flood'

2. The batteries are not waterproof, so I wrapped them in a bag, and then stuffed them back in the pouch.

3. the battery indicator isn't that reliable; it's only red for a minute or two, then dead. That said, it'll run for a long time, so just charge it before a ride and you'll be fine.

honestly, for the price it's REALLY hard to complain about it!

I also have a Brite R duo on my helmet, same comments apply, the difference is that the duo is smaller and lighter, and has half as many LEDS.

V good for the money.

Re:

Are any of the Brite r lights compatible with a go pro mount? I'm using a Bikehut 1600 lumen light on the handlebar which I've been really impressed with, but I'm struggling with helmet lights. I've tried a lezyne 500 lumen model which is a neat size, and I can bolt a go pro adaptor onto the bottom of it to mount on the helmet, but with the battery built in and being quite small the run time is insufficient. These Brite R lights look like just the ticket, but ideally I'd want to mount it on my go pro pad on the helmet rather than strap another bracket on, as it's an endur-o-matic lid with relatively few vents.

All of the lights in this thread without exception I think use a single m4 screw to hold the bracket to the light body. The selecta has a handlebar mount included which screws into this hole. So if the go pro mount hole uses an m4 screw thread you should be good to go.

Both the lights I have have different mounts, so don't expect them to be a direct fit, but bodging these should be pretty easy.

The duo has m4, but I believe the Vier is an M3. I have it on a different mount and had to re-tap it to an M4 (Although the Vier is probably a bit big for a helmet anyway, the Duo is fine, and I have the battery in my camelbak)
