Bar ends

I sometimes think it's also down to suspension and tyres being a lot better and gears being lower. Bikes today will go up stuff that older bikes won't, which means you stay seated longer to get better traction and avoid bob.

In that context bar ends are superfluous to requirements.

Bar ends and flat bars are still hugely popular her in Denmark though - as we don't have that kind of long climb.

Well I am 59, so most of my retro stuff is not NOS (as it is called on ebay) but just old stuff, once upon a time new stock when I bought it a long time ago.
 
I've just fitted barends to my flat bars, apart from having to move the other controls inboard a little I like 'em! Perhaps it is a fashion thing, most times I see barends these days are on BSO's and they are usually positioned pointing up to the sky :shock: :LOL:
 
Used a couple of different types of bar end BITD until I eventually settled on the Onza L shaped ones. Loved them ever since. As a few others have said you have the first section for climbing but then you have the front bit for moving your hands, and weight, forward when you hit a bit of quick, flat singletrack (or if you happen to be on the road) - lets you get a better areo position as well (should you need it). Might be my age (36 - seeing as we're in to age bragging rights atm ;) ) but I find it a bit weird looking at flats without bar ends - certainly on my own bikes.
