Baines flying gate

Re:

hi everyone again thanks for your replies !
not sure i made things clear
the blast and powder coat were £85
the headset and crankset brought it all to £300
so thats £215 for head and crankset ? what do you think ?
seemed a lot to me considering that it doesnt include chainset or forks or bar stem etc...
the frame is bare with no forks
there is plenty of rust but no holes ! its only light rust.
sorry cant sell it !

Tange Levin headset a very reasonable £16.99,not exactly NOS campagnolo but look pretty smart and well keep the forks attached to the frame :)

Hi Shaun ,
That's great my first bit of information for parts
Thank you
John.
Just need crankset then I can get bits to bolt on
Any ideas
I am a complete novice with this bike

Bottom bracket (what you have called the crankset) depends on what sort of chainset you want to use. I'm stuck in the 70's so can advise if you want to choose gear from that era.

For more modern sealed bottom brackets there will be others who can help, lots of people on here use pretty cheap modernish bottom brackets because of ease of use and hey, nobody sees them :)

PICS!

That quote sounds crazy, decent powder coating around here is about twenty quid and parts shouldn't amount to much if you don't want them too.

Can I suggest that the first thing you really need to do is check what standards have/haven't changed (headset, bottom bracket, dropout spacing etc) and get an idea of what you'd like it to turn out like? It'll change of course, always does, but it's good to have an aim in mind at least. Taking a look at any others you can find (google) might give some inspiration.

Forks will be the big issue, afraid I'm no help there but someone else can perhaps suggest what's needed - do they need to be originals or will others work?

£300 seems massively overpriced in my opinion. Perhaps someone is trying it on a bit suggesting that's the market rate. You could get a proper paintjob i.e. enamel for that money and still accrue some components. I would recommend you source some forks as a starting point as you'll need these to work out which headset will work (stack height). I have this issue at the moment in that I can't find forks for a frame with the correct length of steerer column to allow me to install the headset I wish to use on the frame. Once you've got some suitable forks then it's off to a powder coaters for both frame & fork which I would agree with Bagpuss - £60 region.

Then it's down to your personal preferences for the components and what period or brand you wish to have on the bike. There's many virtues in buying decent quality second hand parts as many of the modern parts haven't been designed for a bike of your age - that's not to say it can't be done but this being retrobike, older parts are always more appealing :)

Ah, Didn't spot the "no forks" bit.

Post some pics and let us know the length of the head tube and we can help with advice about the forks. As finney says, older parts are what we do but the cost of them can be off-putting and judicious use of more modern components can be helpful :)

Shaun

PS Finney, what sort of forks are you after? I've got a few lying around. Not lo-pro for small wheels though :)

Re:

Right,
I will try to post some pics tonight , don't expect too much just rust at moment .
Back to bottom bracket I guess the 70s period will be fine as I really want to get the bike rideable I can then replace parts that are not "correct" although 50s bits I reckon will be either a small fortune or ready for the skip.
I will post some measurements of bottom bracket width, headtube length and dropout width as well .
As to what I want it to look like , well when the old boy gave it to mee 30 + years ago it was a fixie but i never got used to not being able to stop pedalling !
So reckon 5 speed or single speed with freewheel ??
Some are even sturmey archered i think so maybe an option there
Really its endless but just having a bit of knowledge would be super
Keep it up everyone I am very grateful indeed
john.

Re:

I'm always amazed by how much ancient detritus still washes up regularly, so there's definitely plenty of hope for it! If you're happy winging the build and adjusting it as you get more familiar with the bike ("I don't need all these gears / god help me I need more gears" etc), then sometimes I just go with the bargains as they crop up!

Re:

As promised dimensions of flying gate
B/bracket width 2 5/8th
B/bracket bore. 1 3/8th thread unknown
