AVID v brakes -FAIL

aye,i suppose there is great leverage from the arms against a tiny pin....
go with the above mentioned 'dry' fit, should be ok so long as the pin in well snug between tension hole and brake arm.

So in trying a different tack I took the other advice above and just screwed it into the mount tight. With the pin loose in the hole. Works fine.

Might take it off and do both again. Stick it, screw it in without tension then Fit to rim. Not sure if i'm setting myself up for a catastrophic fail. Will switch it on to the back wheel just in case.

Hmmm. Thought the epoxy resin would crack it.

Mine is going strong after more than a year!
 
Oh ... forgot to mention that you can take out the whole of the barrel bit that the pin is attached to and replace with the innards from another similar set. I have cannibalised shimano v brakes this way to make a fully functioning set. You just lever the whole centre mechanism out!

So that's an alternative if you don't trust just sticking the pin back in and bolting up tight.

Thanks for the suggestion. seems to have worked, just paranoid it'll fall off bombing down a single track.. just my luck

Well, if your Avids are anything like mine, you can't remove the barrel / centre section, as it extends through the bolt hole and is then bent over it. Only way to get it out is to angle grind the bent over bit. You can, however, remove shimano ones. Which has its advantages ( and also disadvantages....) :oops:

OK - I did it on shimano so kinda assumed they would all work the same - with the shimanos it was a small screwdriver job gently levering right round the barrel and the whole thing came out - but I'll bow to superior knowledge on the Avids!

Tap some threads into it, thread in a cap screw treated with lock-tite blue and then lop off the head of the cap screw nwith a Dremel tool. You'll have then replaced the press in peg with a threaded peg. It will last forever. :cool:

Not sure if my engineering skills are upto yours - even though you make it sound so simple
