Authenticity? or Ride it and have fun?

I've gone for a mix and match approach to my Klein build. I wanted it to be the bike it would have been if it had been in my possesion since new. As with any bike I've had, some for a good few years, stuff that works and doesn't break stays. Other parts are replaced with more modern stuff if it improves the way the bike rides, makes it work better or just look good on it. The way I see it, unless you are going for a specific time accurate build, as long as you are keeping a bit of history alive go for it.

Same here - period-ish with upgrades/replacements for me - if there is a suitable period part, in budget, that will work and won't die in minutes then it gets a chance.

"Build it like you owned it"

In my own humble opinion I think you should go with what ever takes your fancy so long as you get bags of pleasure from the experience

I see no problems with all the approaches taken by those on these forums. Factory fresh or brought bang up to date - as long as you enjoy the build, who cares ? It's your bike so be proud of it !

One thing I would say though is that it's not only about sourcing an NOS frame and simply bolting on NOS components. It's also about getting used bits and bringing them back to life as well as the frame. Lets be honest, restoring the frame is probably the one job we would normally leave to the pros. But the bolt on bits are usually well within our technical means

Whatever you choose to do - ENJOY

This is interesting as I thought the majority of you would say you always try and find period parts.

I'm glad as the parts I have are not too far out so far :)

Will post some pics when I have the wheels.

This is one of the many reasons you need several bikes, so you can cover all the bases :)

It's your bike, do whatever you want with it.

Just so. Bikes are utility objects IMO - and they should evolve/up-date as a matter of function and as best suited to their use at any point in time. But that's my view and thus my bikes all follow that approach - others' think differently and do differently! 'Tis up to you.

ahh so I need another pimp bike just to keep as art that never gets ridden. I suppose that old Fat Chance Ti frame i have in the loft would be a good start ;)

Authenticity? or Ride it and have fun?

Both - if you are lucky, you can still find a bike that is as it was laid up in a garage 20 years ago.

Well if it's something really special I would go for authenticity! But I would probably ride it anyway!
