Vintage Audiolab 8000a
(approx 1984)

This amp is regularly listed as one of the best amps of all time.

Condition: In great overall condition but the lacquer is peeling on the top towards the back, please see the photos. It terms of operation everything works as it should, I’ve never had any issues and it’s a rock solid heavyweight amplifier from when they used to build things properly.
Occasionally on cold start up there is a very faint hum, like a 1 to 2 out of 10, very minor and in line with what you might expect from an older classic amp. I’ve never tried to investigate further as it’s very slight, and sporadic but I wanted to be totally honest.

History: This Amp was launched in 1983 and this is the B serial which should place it at around 1984 build date? The amp was launched to much critical acclaim. Audiolab was started by audio enthusiasts Philip Swift and Derek Scotland and went on to be a very established brand throughout the 80s and 90s creating some high end pre and power amps as used by what Hifi at the time as their reference equipment.

Features: The amp has tone controls with defeat, balance and record and listen options for tape monitoring. It can also operate as a pre or power amp. It supports bi wiring. The phono stage is excellent and supports MM or MC carts via switch and indicator LED.
All Switches feel solid and click well.

How does it sound?:
Sonically this amp is phenomenal, I’ve owned it for over 20 years and it’s never missed a beat. CD players and Record decks have come and gone, but the trusty Audiolab has delivered sonic excellence. I’m only selling due to a major upgrade and would love to keep it for nostalgia but sadly can’t.
The phono stage is a standout feature of this amp, no need for a separate phono amp (pre-amp). In fact the Audiolab has always been highly rated for its in built phono stage.

The 8000a is sonically neutral, open and fast, it’s a true audiophile product and suits any range of speakers and sources as well as musical tastes. It never fails to bring a smile to my face when playing music either a low or high volumes. Don’t let the 60W per chanel fool you, this amp is loud.

“The sound was smooth with "plenty of presence and detail". Add its fine build and features and the 8000A was great value for money.”
