That's plenty dropout length for ss. Just fit a narrower tyre like a 1.9 - 1.75. Remember with ss you are out of the saddle so much you don't need the bounce of a fatter rear tyre. KISS - Keep It Simple Stupid

Cool, I’ll do some swapping about of tyres later and see what’s what.

Progress made...although slow because of my tendency to want to clean/polish every component prior to fitting...

Tyres swapped, plenty of clearance now even with the wheel fully forward in the dropouts. A matching front tyre would look better I think, anyone got a front IRC Mythos XC 1.95?

Polished the seatpost up. Was a “post modern” but the logo was sacrificed to the god of shiny. It’s a 26.4 and pretty much falls straight in. A 26.6 I have is very tight... will do some measuring at some point. Not sure where the clamp came from, it’s a Miche.

Saddle (got it karma on here) boot polished and fitted.

New cheap (£8.99) eBay bars. Look good in the flesh but in the pic the rise looks a bit wrong. Better than the rusty heavy ones that came off, but we’ll see.

Loving the brake set up - polished up a set of lx550 I’ve had for years and fitted some nice chunky Lee Chi levers. I might use some new v brake blocks on the cantis - looks like they should work. Not sure I have any hangers, will have a dig...

Grips and stem are original...resisted the temptation to fit a tioga t bone prestige... maybe if I get the frame painted.

I like the way this is turning out! looks like it's going to be a whole lot of fun ones it's done! and the tyres don't look like they don't match - I woudn't worry about it

Re:

As previous poster said, tyre difference only noticeable to super critical bike snob. Anyway BITD fatter front tyres were common for a wee bit more cushioning and better grip when steering. Plus Single Speed is anti-establishment so why conform to the norm ?
Looking good by the way ;-)

Re:

Getting there... l/h crank out of the scrap box until I manage to get the pedal off the original...

Re:

Hmmm... pretty tight for clearance, wondering whether to try a smaller tyre, another link in the chain, or just cross my fingers... still, getting there! Could try a half link chain I suppose.

...probably put this on hold until there’s an end in sight for this lockdown. I reckon it’s too hilly here to be able to use this from the doorstep. Looking forward to getting out on it once things settle down though!

Pretty much done! Cabled up, ridden it round the garden. Feels good, like an overgrown BMX

A few jobs to do:

Adjust/tighten headset.
Tweak brake setup. Why do old cantis never centre properly? Maybe I’ll try a brand new set of springs this time...
Fuss about rear tyre clearance. Maybe buy/fit narrower tyres.

But it’s all together and looks great I think.

Have taken this out a couple of times now and I’m well pleased with it. It’s become my go-to ride for larking about with my kids in the local park! Definitely wouldn’t be without a single speed mtb now, it’s light, drivetrain is silent, and there’s very little to go wrong. Looking forward to trying it on some more challenging trails although there is a limit to what I can climb on it! Gearing seems about right though, it goes up most hills ok and I don’t mind the lack of top speed.

The 531 frame feels nimble and comfy. Definitely a quality item IMO despite the lack of cred. Would buy another at the right price.

I’m still in two minds about the tyres, would like a smaller one on the back as I’m nervous about the tight clearance, especially in combination with a QR axle and skewer holding the back wheel in the dropouts. Will see how I go once the drivetrain beds in - if I could slide the wheel back a bit I’d be happier!

As someone else suggested, the large front tyre works well to soak up bumps, although i’m not entirely convinced by the tread pattern.

I did try new springs in the brakes but still couldn’t get them perfectly centred. Still, they stop it nicely and don’t rub. I should know better really, in my experience you have to be able to accept some compromise with cantis. Which is why I like V-brakes!

Glad I built it!
