Anybody seen a quadruple chainset before?

There was an Emelle that was sold with this chainset around 1992-93 ish. The frame was chromed plain guage lead pipe, and it came with lots of shiny steel components. It was utter rubbish, even though it looked good from a distance. The classic LRF(low resolution fox ), thankfully it now belongs to history.

I have seen a lot of them on very cheap Bianchi-Bikes years ago (maybe the same years as chris said)

Perhaps it's designed to allow all these crazy single-speed fans the opportunity of having loads of gears but with just the one cog on the rear – rather than a 7x1 setup, you could have a 1x4.
