Any Shimano Nexus experts on here?

Hi folks,
I recently took the plunge on a rear wheel based on a Shimano Nexus SG-8r25 8-speed hub with roller brake on ebay, for my father's bike - the old fella just can't get to grips with a derailleur, poor lad! It was listed as "spares or repair" on account of the broken spoke in the rear wheel, but when it showed up I was immediately concerned by the fact that the black plastic cover immediately behind the sprocket was loose and I could see a few small ball bearings floating around ... :?

My LBS has inspected it and say there's nothing they can do about it short of replacing the internals and conformed that Shimano UK won't service it. I'm not surprised at either - it's a secondhand wheel after all. But before I write it off, does anyone on here have any experience in rebuilding or servicing these hubs? Is there anything that I could do myself? Or does the fact that there are bearings all over the place mean that it's completely screwed and I should just start afresh?

I don't have the wheel to hand at present so can't post any pics. If any particular photos would help, then maybe I can arrange for them to be taken. The wheels was bought looking like this:

so you could perhaps say with hindsight that the cover doesn't look like it should. I just want to know if anything can in principle be done with the existing internals, or if I'm realistically looking at replacing it completely.

Cheers,
Gareth.

Hey Gareth,

You might want to try Velo in Leuven. They are responsible
for servicing all the KU Leuven's fleet of staff bikes, which mostly
have Nexus hubs. They have a few people there with experience
of servicing and repairing hub gears.

I did a bike repair course there in which we dismantled
and re-assembled a Nexus hub. AFAIK, the procedure for taking them apart is basically the same as for a Sturmey Archer - there is a ring on top of the sprocket that you lever off, and after the sprocket is off you can dismantle the hub (mind you, it's been a couple of years since I did this so it might be more complicated than that!).

Anyway, the main Velo site is on the Leuven ring, near to the OHL football stadium (if you can call it a stadium). Don't bother going to the 'Fietspunten' in the city, they don't have a clue...

Anything useful here?

The "Shimano Alfine and Nexus love oil bath" link certainly caught my attention.

At last, a use for all that surplus lubricant I bought when the knocking shop in my village shut down.
