I was told as a kid that this was because you're hand should be free to signal to turn right in the UK and left in Europe, which is the most dangerous manoeuvre. This allows the other hand to use the rear brake, which keeps the bike more stable than the front brake (although less powerful) while the signalling hand is off the bars.
I've not heard that before but it does make sense
Next question.
So if we have lights and bells, why don't we have indicators on bikes?
