Mate of mine did John O'Groats to Land's End on one with his missus in the early/mid 90's.
I'm sure it was a Cannondale

I don't know, it has only been used for test rides in not so steep terrain. I haven't ridden a long downhill yet. Waiting for the snow here to dissapear.
I also plan to change the Grafton brakes for some IRD Switchbacks to get a little bit more brake power.
 
Putting a Magura on the front would help. Cantis on mine were really scary. There is too much cable stretch for the rear brake.
