Any Land Rover fans in?

Will have to see what the off road performance is like before judging it any further

I actually think off road performance is not the most critical thing (though definitely very important) - after all, the new Discoverys, Range Rovers etc are supposedly pretty impressive off road when new and all the electronic toys are working (I've only ever driven "proper" Land Rovers myself)

You were spot on when you said "utility" - I think one of the main reasons the Land Rover has been so long lived is that it is so incredibly versatile and straightforward to adapt to all sorts of niche roles (rail-going, caterpillar tracked, cranes, snow plough etc.)

Nearly as old as me and still going strong......... :D

I like the look of it, perverse I know, but if they are only selling 20,000 Defenders [Surely they used to be called 90 and 110?] a year then they should be able to find capacity to carry on with Defender production alongside the DC100 because killing it off will revive interest in the Defender. I think it looks styled though, rather than an honest functional product.

I think the driving force behind this is European legislation , to meet the Euro rubbish, the bumper/front end does not comply, hence the redesign

I have had 11 Landrovers over the years, and i'm slightly disappointed with my first impressions, very ugly and has lost the Landrover look which has been around since 1948

First glance shows that it has road tyres, big alloys, low plastic bumpers, do we need another Rangerover/Discovery/Freelander ?-No we still want the Landrover Utility

Lets just hope as this is only a concept the end product is very different !

I've had 6 Landies, starting with a '69 2A light-Weight, & ending with a '99 110Td5 CSW

The articles on the BBC website, in the 'Yorkshire Post', & in 'Autocar' stated that this picture is still a design model

Anyway, it's not unveiled until the Frankfurt Motorshow, so things may differ, this is probably a red-herring/distraction.

As for building it as a monocoque, unless they're really keen to lose the specialist market for 'cherry-pickers', road-railers, ambulances, etc...... they need to retain a separate chassis & easily alterable/removable body panels aft of the cab.
Electrics aren't that much of an issue, so long as they're sealed to a proper standard (look at 'winch challenge' motors who run the Td5!!) & not overly complicated.

I remember all the furore when the Td5 was introduced??, I too was sceptical until I spent my own money on a 110CSW
it went on to stay in production for almost a decade, & was tuneable, frugal (I averaged 32MPG from mine on every tankful)

I use a few of the LR forums & they're alive over that set of photos at the moment!!!

Sadly I'm between Landies at the moment, but I'm looking for a nice (last of the run) Range Rover 'Classic' 300Tdi manual, or maybe (just maybe...) a 101FC :D

I think the world is divided into two main parts as far as 4x4s go. There are those of us in the Highlands, Yorkshire, Wales, Cornwall and wherever else that 'suffer' conditions that require something that can handle them, as well as those involved in industries that require vehicles of a go anywhere nature, such as forestry, field maintenance, farming.

Then there are those who have no practical need for a 4x4, but enjoy the image.

I am sure the second group will be more than happy with a new Defender that will be better of parked at Sainsbury's than working up a muddy cross country track in a rain storm.

The rest of us can put one together from parts if we need to.

Didn't tata buy landrover? because this certainly looks like tat...

The reason they weren't selling wasn't to do with their looks, more to do with the price of a new landrover and the fact it was antiquated.

They could have kept the style and combined it with all the fancy new tech, they say this thing is going to be aimed at the new emerging markets which need reliably 4x4's?

Well they better get back to grass roots...scrap this shit before it gets to production stage for gods sake.

Call that thing a Land Rover??

This is a Land Rover ...... ;)
