Any Land Rover fans in?

Why sit on the fence?

sorry, just remembered the reincarnation of the Fiat 500 nonsense too

Anywho... Landrover have a big comfy model, they have a softroader etc where does this new Defender thing fit in? all very well saying it can have winch options and stuff but it's not going to appeal to that sort of person, is it? :?

Can you stick a V8 in it...

Can you bob tail it...

Can you stick a Rangey/Disco/110 body on it...

Can you stick the body on a Rangey chassis...

Can you stick a 6.9 V8 marine diesel in it...

They have to change it. Its not selling enough to justify its existance. Similar cars are almost as good for pulling heavy loads, going offroad and the military are changing to more specialist vehicles.
The build quality on LR is poor and that is being polite.

They could have changed it, but kept the good things.

It really is a world icon, just like the old Jeep, the Beetle and the Mustang. You should never throw away those connections.

:)

In a word Plastic, I hate it.

Why change a design that has survived over 50 years. AS LGF said I doubt it can hardly be customised let alone modified.

I'm almost willing to be persuaded about plastic body panels... however IMO a "real" replacement Land Rover must;

Be designed for maintenance, not for production
Use comfortably over-specified suspension / steering / braking components
Have a separate chassis
Have an entirely bolt-together body (OK, rivets acceptable too!)
Have as limited use of electronics as possible
Have a very basic and uncluttered cabin
Be designed with easy modification in mind.
Be produced for a decent period (10 years?) with NO remodelling other than to address any serious functional shortcomings discovered in use.

If it were simple enough it would also be cheaper to assemble, even allowing for good components.

The biggest problem I can see in achieving that is on the powertrain side; to meet environmental regulations, modern engines need to use quite a lot of electronics... I'm not really sure how that can be avoided, though using only off-the-shelf components with an existing well proven service record would be best.

If it can't be properly repaired by a basic country garage, it's useless.

Sadly, I expect whatever does end up in production will completely miss the point and will be yet another form over function disaster that is remodelled every 18 months for no good reason :(

Mingin' but that's 'modern' design for you.

What the hell was wrong with a Series 1?

You have a bad back; have a guess! ;)

The world's full of soft arses!

I have a creamed back but I'd rather be in pain and look cool, than pain free and look like a right ****

I have had 11 Landrovers over the years, and i'm slightly disappointed with my first impressions, very ugly and has lost the Landrover look which has been around since 1948

First glance shows that it has road tyres, big alloys, low plastic bumpers, do we need another Rangerover/Discovery/Freelander ?-No we still want the Landrover Utility

Will have to see what the off road performance is like before judging it any further

Lets just hope as this is only a concept the end product is very different !
