I spent a day at the seaside today and saw some luvverly boats.
Also, living on the Thames I see beauties sailing up and down every summer and always end up spending the rest of the day daydreaming at how splendid it would be to while away the hours on the water...

trouble is I know nothing about boats and have even tried searching for the best place to start looking in order to purchase one, but its a daunting market when you know nothing.

does anyone have any experience or tips?
All I know is, id love a boat. It needs to float.

Experience of the sea :?
Seasickness-Best described as you first think your dying then hope you actually do

Theres quite a few boaty types on here,im sure you'll get plenty of advice
So what kind of boaty thing were you thinking?,sail or motor?,something to live on or something for the weekend/holidays ?.

Chris that's on here has a narrow boat[or a barge, forgive me if im wrong]
and i think he was considering selling it :?

Trying to remember who it was who was advertising a swap of a boat for an MTB. .

Could've tried a search but I've only just thought of it in the last 2 mins :?

All you need to know is that someone once said "Sailing is like tearing up £50 notes in a cold shower".
If an engine is involved, it costs a bit more.
Speedboats, even more.
I used to share a 20', 200bhp ski boat with some mates, about 15 years ago. We'd put £80 in the tank before we reached the slipway, and visit the fuelling jetty, at £120 a pop , once or twice thereafter, in a day.
Skimming across the briny at 60mph on a carpet of bubbles soon loses it's appeal when you realise it's costing a quid a minute.
If you have to pay mooring or marina charges...
One of the syndicate took it to Croatia on holiday.
It sank in a war zone.
We were all quite glad.

Lol, very true!

I am a life long seal, never out of the water long.

What exact boat are you thinking about?

I would consider joining a sailing club or suchlike and getting plenty of experience before buying my own boat.

Good luck, and welcome to Poorville.

:)

if your gonna try sailing for the first time go to a rya sailing school they will teach you the basics and get you out proberly in a topper good fun little boats if you into rowing (hardwork) then an old 12ft cheaper is a good place to start but there only good on river and lakes if you want to go offshore sailing and motoring then id advice getting some lake practice in first ;)

iv'e been sailing since i was 8 and got my rya saftey boat ticket and sailing level 5 ticket and used to race when i was a sea cadet  is fun on the water if your on a real tight buget get a canoe or wave ski ;) good fun to paddle around in the surf

ow and if you get the chance to go in a fireball (my old dinghy) you'll find the true meaning of speed esp if they have an asimetric sail set up and spinicar

Cant wait till next month when the weather is better so i can haul my stinkboat out on the bay once again.
