Antwack’s 1998(?) GT LTS 2000

Hello everyone

You may have seen me post this in the 1997 and earlier part of the forum.

I bought this bike a couple of weeks back. It had been stored for a very long time. Something that had been used to lubricate the chain previously had gone very hard and even leaving it in white spirit wouldn’t dissolve it. It wasn’t rusty?

Anyway, I gave it a quick wash and inflated the tyres. A week or so later I sprayed a little GT85 in the usual places, took the chain from another bike and took it for a spin.

I’m a size 11 shoe and the first thing I noticed was the inside of my heels hitting the chainstay’s. Something I’ve never encountered before. If slimmer shoes don’t fix this I don’t know if I’ll be able to put up with it!

If I do keep it then it will receive a basic service, new inner tubes and a chain. It looks to have had little use. The seller said he’s pretty sure it has a Ti BB. The brakes are very responsive! One question is, can I get get inner tubes with extra long presta valves so they protrude sufficiently from the rim?

One wheel has a one way valve extender on it and the other you can only just get the foot pump on.

Can anyone recommend a chain to buy?

Shimano or Sram?

I think the one that was on the bike was a Sram PC58?

There’s a few cheap ones on eBay which are cheap but I’m not sure if they’re fake 🤔

Quite nice bicycle, that was many years ago my dream bike, well the STS model.

It is a 8 speed drivetrain, shimano and sram has both good chains, I use both in shimano casettes and work both the same.

For retro bicycles like this I use to buy the Sram 850 or 870 casettes and chains with shimano RD and Fron deraillerurs because they are a little bit better than shimano 8 speed, in shimano 8 speed is Altus or acera and it is a little bit cheaper, weight a little bit more etc

@Antwack
You can buy presta valve inner tubes with different length valves from Decathlon, standard size is 48mm and the longer 60mm which should easily fit deep section rims. I am sure you can find long valve inner tubes from other outlets too. ;)
