Anyone recommend a good "FREE" anti virus program ? I,ve been using AVG but it seems to slow things down quite a bit.
And I'd like to replace it with something that doesn't make my (old & tired)lap top run like I do "very slowly".

Ps

I'm a not very computer savy so please keep thing simple like me ;)

cheers in advance kaya

I find Microsoft's security essentials hard to beat. Used AVG and Avast in the past, but I tend to run MSE on my home PCs (or those that I fettle for friends / family).

I'd be surprised if you found any other effective anti-virus program to be significantly less heavy on resources than AVG (though MSSE is possibly slightly less demanding than AVG.)

Sadly almost all AV vendors seem determined to throw in as many "features" as possible (voice notification every time the database is updated, "Performance analyzer" etc) when they should be concentrating on getting the job done as efficiently as possible.

When installing, always say no to the toolbars / on-screen gadgets etc which are a pointless waste of resources.

No active AV here, but I browse responsibly and occasionally let ClamWin do a scan.
No nonsense features on that one and it's available in a portable version, so no installation and no toolbars and spam.

I always carry it on an USB stick and launch it from there on other people's PCs. It picks up stuff that AVG, Avast and Antivir all missed.

that makes us two, plus some ccleaner, and comodo.

On the vista disaster pc, Avast and Trend Housecall ( online virus scanner).

And I run an anti virus on the Mac too.

2 that are rated pretty highly, they never seem to fail, for me anyway
Spybot search and destroy
And Malwarebytes

Stay off them p2p sites ;)

I use the free version of AVG as my one and only online protection.I dont even have windows firewall on im that confident
Recommended to me via a mate about to embark on a phd in computer stuff[i call it stuff as he can confuse me very quickly  ] and recommended to him by the professor of computer security at Glasgow University.
Ive been running like this for about 8 months now and not an intrusion to be had
