Anti-theft parts bin sh*tter.

Steps 1-4 for the frame are complete.

1 - Frameset Keyed up with 240 grit
2 - Thorough clean and degrease
3 - Four layers of Rust-oleum red oxide primer, first three layers sanded back, and fourth textured with a brush
4 - Single rough coat rattlecan paintjob

I'll leave it to cure indoors for a couple of days, then I'll set about sanding away the areas that will be rusted. The texture will help to remove lots of high spots while leaving traces of paint in patches, the effect will also look a lot like oxidation bubbling away beneath the remaining paint.

I've studied hundreds of pics of rusty bikes over the past week or so, so I'll be aiming to ensure the worst rust appears in the most common places. I'm guessing bike thieves see a lot of rusty bikes, so I want nothing that doesn't ring true..

Works ok in B&Q, Halfords, Decathlon etc

But I'm not sure it would work in Claires Accessories, Waterstones or Ann Summers
I recently walked into a PoundBakery for some lunch with my bike, in and out, no one batted an eyelid, however I won't make a habit of this. Even the guy serving me didn't tell me off for bringing my bike in! 😁

I walked into a (roadie) bike shop in 1994 with my Mountain bike, and the owner stuck his broom handle through my spokes to stop me!

Had it been a road bike he'd have been a grovelling sycophant.🙄

What a w@nker. We all ride! I know let's make it devisive 🙄 brilliant idea.

In his own way
(Fred Baker Cycles, rip🪦)
he was expressing his disapproval of modern stuff - upstairs he had those racks with individual sprockets for suntour freewheels and others.

All gone down the scrapper now and I've outlasted him. 🪳

Most determined thieves are modernists, most grumpy old men are not😉
