How would option 2 work?

I think the tube is just long enough to fit a threaded headset. And one of those stems which I creatively called a "retro stem", the ones that go into the steerer tube. It's just not long enough to accomodate the full 40mm of the stem clamp.

I've used old Avid SAAGO stems (cheap on ebay) to get around short-steerer issues, they need less sticking out than most -- about 27mm IIRC, but I've got one here I can measure if you want to know for sure.

Ritchey headsets are pretty low, but the Crank Brothers ones being knocked out cheap by CRC are lower -- 21mm, which probably gets you 7mm on the Ritchey depending on which one you have.

Not cheap, or retro, or pretty, but there's this:

Needs 22mm of steerer according to the blurb.

Indeed. Would work, even with the ritchey headset, but out of the question, I just want to build this thing and ride it! (and not die of steerer tube impalement)

Depending on the exact numbers, a SAAGO might get you there. Retro and cheap! Prettiness in the eye of the beholder, though.

Thanks, It's pretty enough, but what's the minimum tube height for that "collet clamp system"??? Maybe I ask the seller.

As I mentioned earlier, I have one I can measure if you like :)

ah, sorry, you're right, around 27 mm, right? Would be cool if you could measure it exactly then, as I have around 2 mm left from the race crown that hasn't quite settled yet, which, by the way, a little off-topic, is something I read in the Sheldon Brown site that is more or less OK, that it will settle with the riding and then I just readjust the headset.
