Another newbie playing the "Name my Frame" game.

Re:

Fun Frame Game :) like it. With good old old google I looked at who used RGF bb shells around Merseyside.
Everyone did at the time but Harry Quinn popped up on Classic Rendezvous and has serial numbers and not all were stamped with a OI to make a Q. Some 3000, 4000 and 5000 numbers showing on there 5000s being 80s. Pure guestimation but a possibility. Some frames showing no Q were made to order it also shows.
What colours were on your frame? Original colour could help identify if it is a Quinn?

Like Shaun says anyone could have made it and someone else puts a serial number, paint and transfers on it. I actually saw a full Chrome Razesa yesterday with the same lugs and campag drop outs as yours. Stunning!

Oooo...I love a bit of bike porn in the morning, starts the day off right.

I'll get back to you on the other stuff.

The paint was stripped off with "Easy Strip", bought it off eBay supposed to be 10x stronger than Nitromors, pretty nasty stuff. By painting on and then quickly/gently scrapping the paint I was able to remove the paint 1 layer at a time, to see what was underneath.

Layers - Red, Primer, Red, Primer, Blue (translucent), Silver, Primer.

So original colour looks like Flamboyant Blue.

As you probably know decals will leave a shadow in the paint. There had clearly been a name in block letters on the down tube, a decal on the top of the seat tube, tube type? but too indistinct to make out the size, a decal near the bottom of the tube, again too indistinct and a large decal or name on the front of the seat tube. There was also the shadow of a badge on the head tube, but again too indistinct to give any clues. :(

It is a good game this.

Thanks for all your input, much appreciated.

I think that Shaun's initial assessment was correct, that it is a nice frame built for a shop to supply, therefore I will probably never find out who built it.

The one thing that hasn't been mentioned is frame weight. I have looked at probably 100's of spec's and pictures of 1980's frames trying to identify a possible builder, the frame weight for a similar sized 531c frame is about 2050g, mine weighs 1830g and yes I did check the scales :D.

I have checked the tubes and there is no internal ribbing so I don't think it is Columbus, so I am thinking 531 SL/Pro which builds up about 180g lighter than standard 531. The frame builder who did the repairs (a noted authority on Reynolds) says it is definitely not 753.

So with the angles, short rake and light tube, I am thinking Time Trial bike.

Any suggestions as to who could have supplied it. In the Merseyside area I am thinking RJ Quinn, but I am sure there are plenty of others.

I have a Langsett frame which has similar lugs, seat stay/seat, brake bridge. Frame was purchased new in 1988. I believe at that time Langsett (Sheffield) did not build their own frames. Someone out there may know who did.

Re:

Been checking Ellis Briggs frames out Steve and give them a try. If you have Facebook they're on there or drop them an email. Worth a shot, they used four numbers on their frames.

Interestingly if you do a web search and put in the words (RGF stamped on bike frame) there is quite a bit of stuff that turns up on it looks like it may be french or at least the BB could be tho don't quote me on that tho.
