Thanks. I did look at those, but they need an obscure size pilot hole - 10.6 to 11.4mm. No idea how I can drill a hole of that size.
Unless you have some tips to pass on.

27/64" = 10.716mm
7/16" = 11.112mm

I don't have a top plate, but I did replace my campag standard bolt with a lovely titanium one.
Go on Ebay. You want M8 35mm Titanium. It cost me £3.10
The seller isn't there at the mo, but there are others.

As it happens the main problem was with the bolt as fitted. It obviously was non standard as it needed a 13mm spanner to tighten.
It had been put in wrong maybe several times. I managed to rethread it with a die but the thread was as bent as a dogs back leg.
The top plate threads were subsequently damaged. I got some new hex bolts from Westfield and they more or less fitted. Could have sufficed but the one I was sent was perfect so that is now in place.
I'm not enough of a weight weeny to splash out on titanium.
These were M8 40mm.
