Anodised Rims

Why does every top end retro build have perfectly anodised rims in grey or black with zero brake marks on the rims, yet I can’t find any for sale of that era unless they are ceramic.

Are people just re anodising old mavic rims or am I missing something here?

I get it with the smoke/dart reissue tyres, once I figured that one out I ordered 2 sets immediately ha.

Anyway might be a daft question but this is my first build with nicer parts so want it to look right

So, you can find them, but I've not seen too many around recently. Top spec. rims in 'New Old Stock' (NOS) or unused condition can be pricey. Typically, the ones I have been lucky to find at a decent price, I have bought as rims that have never been built, and then built up into a wheel myself. If you ride them, then of course the anodising will wear off after a while, so some folk may also use the same rims on multiple builds, and have a separate wheelset if they also ride the bike.

Personally, none of my stuff is that exotic that it cannot be used and ridden, even if it is NOS. But everyone has their own view 🙂

Thanks, I’ll keep an eye out for some at a decent price now I know they actually exist ha
You could always put a 'Wanted' post in the MTB Wanted forum. Most of us have plenty of old wheel sets and rims stuffed in the shed somewhere! It's worth a try.
