Alpinestars Al-Mega DX EOS 1991

Retro Guru
Back in January I posted a Wanted thread looking for a new build for the year ahead. Three bikes featured on the shortlist …

* '91-'93 Alpinestars Al-Mega DX or XT EOS
* '90 Explosif in the black and purple splatter livery
* '88-'92 Orange Clockwork in iconic white and orange fade livery

I searched the forums for a good month or so for possible contenders, pestering a good few Retrobike peeps along the way … apologies.

Other frames considered too during those following 6-8 weeks, RM Altitude, Overbury Pioneer, Pace RC200, but for various reasons I didn’t get any over the line.

As is typically the way with these things, right at the end of Feb two fantastic opportunities fell in my lap. Ben (@boy"O"boy ) settled on selling one of his impressively restored Raleigh Dyna-Tech Endeavours. Always hankered after one of these, and as demonstrated by his incredible build thread that has become the ultimate knowledge of all and everything to do with the Endeavour, they are a genuine rarity. Ben generously delivered frame, stem and bars to my door early in March. Still massively grateful to you Ben!

Within the week following, opportunity two came along. A sorry looking, but almost entirely original 1991 Alpinestars Al-Mega DX appeared on eBay at a more than reasonable price. Assuming the norm, I queried the seller about cracks ... surprisingly nothing obvious, so committed to the purchase and promptly arranged collection the next day.

So from nothing in January, I now have not one, but two builds which I’m genuinely very excited about getting started with in 2025!

I’ll be posting the progress of the Al-Mega build in this thread and will be creating another for the Endeavour shortly.

I nearly bought this myself is the paint in good condition and it's just the stickers than need changing also did you see the other one that was really mint about same time think he wanted about £500 for it will be following the colours look stunning when clean up on these

@baron von greenback Paintwork's not too bad. Some scrapes and chips. Scrapes should clean up a decent amount and chips can hopefully be touched in. I pondered over stripping and getting it re-sprayed / powdered, but it still has the original dealers shop sticker on there and that pulled me towards keeping its originality. Will post up more detailed shots of condition in the morning.

Did see that very fresh looking frameset advertised on eBay too. Exchanged some messages with him. He had put quite a lot of time and money into repairing cracks and paintwork, hence the price, but I couldn't justify that sort of money.

Good glad it's what I thought no I wouldn't respray if you can bring the brightness out with tcut or something these bikes shine ye that guy did full respray did he I nearly pulled the trigger but I was paying off a package if parts off someone I keep an eye on this mate are you doing the stem in the yellow colour also I would look at the paint that they use on Porsche brake callipers for touch up I don't know how close it is but that's were I was going to start for a match mate

Some more detailed shots of condition once I got the bike home:

I think I'm going to try and stick to catalogue spec/look as much as possible because the bike's got most of its original components, so will likely go with a black stem ... but that could very well change by the time I get to that 🤔

I managed to find RAL colour references on a Facebook thread, so ordered some touch up bottles from M.A.D Paints. The yellow is spot on. The white appears to be little too grey in tint.

Stripped frame and gave it a good clean. Came up reasonably well.

Decals were pretty untidy so stripped these off too.

Now to touch up, TCut and polish paintwork before replacing decals with new ones.
